Ron Olsen, a former deputy chief of the Prospect Heights Fire District and father of Battalion Chief Scott Olsen, passed away on Wednesday, November 8. He was 79 years old.
Ron began his career with the PHFD in 1962 and served for over two decades before retiring as deputy chief in 1988. After retiring, he continued to serve part-time as a fire inspector until 2015, when he officially retired for the second time. His dedication to public safety never wavered, even after stepping down from his leadership role.

Throughout his long career, Ron played a vital role in maintaining the district’s facilities. In the early 1970s, he contributed significantly to the expansion of the original fire station, particularly in masonry work. In the 2000s, he helped with major masonry repairs, which saved the district both time and money. His hands-on contributions were always appreciated and made a lasting impact on the department.
Ronald J. Olsen was born on October 24, 1938, in Chicago, to Harry and Bertha (Torkilsen) Olsen. He lived in Prospect Heights for much of his life and was deeply connected to the community. A devoted family man, he is survived by his wife Lorraine, his children Kimberly, Scott, and Brigette, and numerous grandchildren and extended family members.
He was also a member of the D.C. Crieger Masonic Lodge #81 AF & AM for 50 years and served as a Past Patron of the Arlington Heights Chapter of the Eastern Star. His legacy extends beyond his service to the fire district—he was a pillar of strength, kindness, and commitment to his community.
A visitation will be held on Friday, November 10, from 3–9 PM at Lauterburg & Oehler Funeral Home, 2000 E. Northwest Highway, Arlington Heights. The funeral service will take place on Saturday, November 11, at 10:30 AM. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Cancer Society are encouraged.
