Cummins releases diesel engine that meets EPA 2010 emission standards

The US Federal Environmental Protection Agency's 2010 emission standards (equivalent to European VI), which will enter into force on January 1, 2010, are the most stringent exhaust gas regulations for vehicle diesel engines in the world, and the emission limits for nitrogen oxides and particulates are almost approaching. Zero (the upper limit of nitrogen oxide emission is 0.2 milligrams per hour and the particulate matter discharge is 0.01 milligrams per hour). In addition, the EPA 2010 regulations also require the first-time installation of an OBD vehicle-mounted automatic diagnostic system for road vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of over 6,350 kilograms.

Cummins medium- and heavy-duty vehicle diesel engines will be based on the EPA 2007 engine platform, using the new generation of cooled exhaust gas recirculation (CEGR), variable-section turbocharger (VGT), particulate filter (DPF) and SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) post-treatment system to meet EPA 2010 emission standards.

According to calculations made by the Cummins Technology Center, the fuel economy of the SCR-lined diesel engine is 5% higher than that of the previous-generation Cummins EPA 2007 and 9% higher than that of the competitor with pure EGR cylinder clean-up. In the environment where freight rates continue to decline, the improvement of fuel economy is of crucial strategic importance to customers in reducing operating costs and improving operating efficiency.

In terms of fuel system, with the exception of ISB 6.7, which continues to use Bosch high-pressure common rails, the ISC8.3, ISL9, ISX11.9 and ISX15 series will use the UHP common rail fuel system developed by Cummins in cooperation with Scania of Sweden ( XPIHPCR).

One of the most important features of Cummins' new 2010 products is that both the medium-horsepower and heavy-duty diesel engines share the same ECM series of electronic control modules, which reduces costs and facilitates daily use and maintenance of users.
