American scientists discover new sensor materials

Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have now discovered that graphene, a monoatomic carbon material, has a photosensitivity characteristic that generates current when exposed to light. Researchers claim that this discovery will affect many areas, including photography:

"Graphene can be a good light-sensitive material," because it generates electricity in a different way than other light-sensitive materials. It can 'feel very broad light ranges,' Jarillo-Herrero said. For example, it can be used in infrared light. It works well, and other materials can hardly do this. This will make graphene an important component of devices including night-vision goggles and astronomical telescopes."

Perhaps in the future, we will see sensors made of graphene on digital cameras.
