On December 6th, last year, the Chicago Fire Department (CFD) took a significant step forward in enhancing its emergency response capabilities by introducing a new asset to the Special Operations Division. The newly established **Rescue Vac Unit 5-2-4** is now part of the department’s specialized resources, designed to tackle complex rescue scenarios across the city.
Based out of the Special Operations facility at 39th and Honore, this unit is an upgraded X-Streets and Sanitation sewer vac truck that many may have spotted during the International Fire Chief’s Association trade show held at McCormick Place last summer. The vehicle is built on an LN Series Ford chassis and has been customized by **Rescue Vac Systems**, a local company specializing in retrofitting equipment for emergency operations. This modification ensures the truck is fully equipped for high-stakes trench rescue missions.
Unit 5-2-4 will be deployed for city-wide trench rescues and can also be called upon for suburban incidents through the **MABAS Box Alarm System**, ensuring a swift and coordinated response. The addition of this unit reflects the CFD's ongoing commitment to innovation and preparedness in emergency services.
The truck was previously used by the Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation before being repurposed for rescue operations.
