This message comes from Eric Haak:
On Sunday morning around 0605 hours, the Englewood Fire Alarm Office received multiple calls about a fire at the intersection of 44th and Shields Avenue. Engine 50 arrived on scene and confirmed a fire in a 2.5-story vacant frame building that had exposure to a 1.5-story occupied structure. Just two minutes later, the 2nd Battalion reported heavy fire in the 2.5-story building and requested a "Box" for additional resources. The first photo below was taken just before Engine 50 deployed their deck gun, which significantly reduced the visible flames in the front of the building.
Despite this effort, there was considerable fire extension into the adjacent occupied structure, prompting crews to make an interior attack on that building. As the fire continued to spread, Squad 5’s Snorkel and Tower Ladder 39 were brought in to assist with the mop-up operation in the original building, which was undergoing renovation at the time.
Looking back at a Google Street View image from October 2015, the building was marked as Red-X, suggesting it had previously suffered a basement fire. It seems the property had a history of structural issues, making this incident even more concerning.
The photos provided by Eric Haak capture the intensity of the fire and the efforts of the firefighters who worked through the night to bring the blaze under control. Each image tells a part of the story, showing the flames engulfing the structure, the engine arriving on the scene, and the crews working tirelessly to prevent further damage.
