On Sunday morning around 6:05 AM, the Englewood Fire Alarm Office received multiple calls about a fire at the intersection of 44th and Shields Avenue. Engine 50 arrived first and confirmed a fire in a 2.5-story vacant frame building that had exposure to a 1.5-story occupied structure. Just two minutes later, the 2nd Battalion reported heavy fire in the 2.5-story building and requested a "Box" — meaning additional resources. Fire spread quickly into the adjacent occupied building, prompting an interior attack by responding units. As the fire continued to grow, Squad 5’s Snorkel and Tower Ladder 39 were brought in to help extinguish the remaining flames in the structure, which was undergoing renovation at the time.
