On January 18, China Bluestar Group announced that it and its subsidiary Adisseo will establish a new methionine production facility in China, with plans to start operations in 2011. This project is expected to address the growing demand within the country and support Adisseo’s global expansion strategy. In addition, the company has revealed plans to invest further in its European production facilities, aiming to strengthen its competitive edge in the global methionine market and maintain its leadership position.
Adisseo, which joined forces with China Bluestar in January 2006, is the world’s second-largest producer of methionine and the only company capable of producing both solid and liquid forms of the product. It holds a strong presence in the animal feed nutrition additives sector. Gérard Deman, CEO of Adisseo, emphasized that over the next decade, demand for methionine in the Asia-Pacific region is expected to account for more than half of the global increase. With the new plant set to come online in 2011, the current European production capacity will no longer be sufficient to meet rising international demand, particularly in Asia.
The new facility, located in the petrochemical industrial zone on the outskirts of Tianjin, will initially have a production capacity of 70,000 tons per year, with a total designed capacity of 140,000 tons annually. The site was chosen due to the availability of key raw materials such as propylene, methanol, and sulfur, which can be sourced locally, reducing costs and improving supply chain efficiency.
In parallel, Adisseo plans to invest an additional €20 million in its production sites in France and Spain over the next two years. This investment aims to enhance the productivity and profitability of its European operations, ensuring they remain a vital part of the company’s global supply chain. By expanding in both Asia and Europe, Adisseo is positioning itself to better meet the evolving needs of the global methionine market.
