On the early morning of March 25, 2016, Chris Tierney, an off-duty firefighter and paramedic from Streamwood, was commuting on the Jane Addams Tollway in Elgin during rush hour when he witnessed a shocking scene. A limousine had suddenly become airborne, crashing into the middle of a construction zone. The vehicle was now engulfed in flames, and its passengers were trapped inside.
Without a second thought, Chris pulled over and rushed to the scene. His training kicked in, and he knew that every second counted. “I heard screaming from inside the car,†he later recalled. “The driver had already escaped, but the rest of the passengers were stuck.†He immediately yelled for help, asking a nearby construction worker to grab a fire extinguisher while he ran back to his truck to get a hammer to break the windows open.
With quick precision, Chris managed to break the windows and assess the situation. The air around them was thick with oil and gas, making the environment extremely dangerous. Inside, several people were severely injured, and one woman was unconscious. Despite the risk, Chris didn’t hesitate—he pulled the first passenger out and helped others escape one by one.
He then focused on the unconscious woman, checking for a pulse and starting CPR as soon as possible. While he worked, ambulances and fire engines arrived, and Chris joined the emergency responders, helping to transport the injured and assist with medical care.
Chris, who has been a firefighter for 13 years and is also part of the firefighter training committee, said, “This is what we train for. I wasn’t thinking—it just happened automatically. We train for the one percent, and this was it.â€
The Firefighter Award honors professionals, volunteers, or medical personnel associated with a fire department who go above and beyond their duties, showing extraordinary courage and dedication either during an emergency or through long-term service to the community.
