Ternary catalysis refers to the catalytic conversion of harmful gases such as CO, HC, and NOx emitted by automobile exhaust into non-harmful carbon dioxide, water, and nitrogen through oxidation and reduction. The catalytic converter is mainly used, and the carrier component of the catalytic converter is a porous ceramic material installed in a special exhaust pipe. It is called a carrier because it does not participate in the catalytic reaction itself, but is covered with a layer of precious metals such as platinum, rhodium, and palladium. It is the most important external cleaning device installed in the exhaust system of automobiles.

The working principle of the three-way catalytic converter is that when a high-temperature automotive exhaust passes through the purification device, the purifying agent in the three-way catalytic converter will enhance the activity of the three gases of CO, HC, and NOx, and promote a certain oxidation-reduction chemical reaction. Among them, CO is oxidized to a colorless, non-toxic carbon dioxide gas at high temperatures; HC compounds are oxidized to water (H20) and carbon dioxide at high temperatures; NOx is reduced to nitrogen and oxygen. The three harmful gases become harmless gases, so that the automobile exhaust can be purified.


The three-way catalytic reactor resembles a muffler. Its outside is made of a double stainless steel sheet. In the double sheet sandwiched with insulation material - asbestos fiber mat. The interior is equipped with a scavenger in the middle of the mesh partition. The scavenger consists of a carrier and a catalyst. The carrier is generally made of aluminum oxide and has a spherical shape, a polygonal shape, a mesh partition, and the like. Detergents are actually catalytic, also known as catalysts. Catalysts used are platinum, rhodium, and palladium. Spraying one of these on a carrier constitutes a scavenger.


Generally, the three-way catalyst does not need to be cleaned. If the three-way catalytic oxidation is severe, it will be directly replaced. Because the operating temperature of the three-way catalyst is about 350 degrees, it is better not to have liquid water remaining, so the cleaning is not good.
