Chicago park dedicated to fallen firefighters

Excerpts from the Chicago Tribune:

On a cold Thursday morning, Firefighter/Paramedic Patrick King and Firefighter Anthony Lockhart—both of whom lost their lives battling a fire on February 11, 1998—were honored at the very location where they made the ultimate sacrifice. The two firefighters were killed when the roof of the Beverly Tire Store collapsed during a blaze. Today, that site is a peaceful park named in their memory, and it was here that the King Lockhart Memorial Statue was unveiled on a bitterly cold day.

Gina King, Patrick’s widow, still feels the weight of that night at 10615 S. Western Ave. “It feels like it happened last month,” she said. “They say time heals all wounds, but that’s not true.” She continues to wear a necklace with a small replica of her husband’s badge, number 1407, as a personal reminder of his service and sacrifice.

Chicago Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago spoke about the significance of the park and statue. “This is a reminder that even with the best training and equipment, things can go wrong. This job is dangerous, and we do everything we can to make sure every firefighter comes home safely. But it doesn’t always happen that way.” He added, “Some may have seen this fire as routine, but in our world, nothing is ever truly routine.”

The park features walking paths, benches, and a symbolic tribute: bronze boots placed at the exact spots where each man's body was found. The statue, created by sculptor Marshall Svendsen, stands as a powerful symbol of selflessness. “It’s not about them—it’s about others,” said Rev. Thomas Mulcrone, chaplain of the Chicago Fire Department. “This statue reminds us of what firefighters and paramedics stand for every single day.”

Thanks, Dan.
