Alcoa expects sales of automotive aluminum panels to increase nearly three times in 2015

According to Reuters, in order to reduce the weight of auto bodies, more and more automakers have begun to use aluminum materials to produce auto bodies. Alcoa Inc. recently stated that by 2015, the company’s operating income from selling aluminum panels to auto makers is expected to increase. Nearly three times more than in 2012.

Randall Scheps, global automotive marketing director at Alcoa Inc., said in a telephone interview recently that the company’s operating income from automotive aluminum (mainly used for the manufacture of auto bodies) is expected to soar from $160 million in 2012 to $580 million in 2015.

In order to meet increasingly stringent emission standards, various car companies are forced to reduce the weight of the car. The weight of aluminum materials is only one-third of that of traditional steel materials, but its price is relatively expensive.

Aluminum has successfully penetrated into the automotive market. It has been widely used in engine steel, heat exchangers, gearboxes and wheels. However, there are still only a few applications for doors, hoods, and tails. A few high-end automakers, such as Audi and Jaguar Land Rover, have adopted aluminum as the material for automotive doors.

Alcoa estimates that the consumption of aluminum materials for automotive bodies in North America is expected to reach 420,000 tons by 2015, quadrupling the current level, and the consumption of aluminum materials for other automotive components is also expected to increase. It increased by 15% to 2.66 million tons.
