This is coming directly from Tim Olk:
> Boone County Fire District 2 reported an anhydrous ammonia leak this afternoon. The incident occurred at two tanks located on a farm near the intersection of Garden Prairie and Marengo Road.
I just got off the phone with Tim Olk, who sent over some photos he took at the scene. The situation seems to be under control now, but it was quite serious earlier. Here’s what I gathered from speaking with him:
The first tank started leaking early this morning, prompting an immediate response from the fire department. By the time the second tank also began leaking around noon, crews were already on-site and working to mitigate the hazard. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported so far, and local residents were evacuated as a precaution.
Tim mentioned that the wind was blowing steadily throughout the day, which helped disperse the ammonia gas away from nearby homes. Still, the smell was noticeable several blocks away, and emergency personnel wore full hazmat suits while handling the situation.
Here are some images Tim shared with me:

As you can see in these pictures, there was significant activity around the tanks. Firefighters used water sprays to neutralize the ammonia cloud and prevent it from spreading further. According to Tim, the cleanup process will likely take several days, as crews need to ensure all traces of the chemical are safely removed.
For anyone living in the area, it’s important to stay vigilant and follow any instructions issued by local authorities. Even though the immediate danger has passed, there may still be lingering fumes or contamination in certain areas.
If you’re driving through the region, avoid lingering too long near the site, as the fumes can irritate your eyes and respiratory system. And if you notice any unusual odors or symptoms like coughing, shortness of breath, or nausea, seek fresh air immediately and contact emergency services.
It’s incidents like these that remind us how crucial it is for industrial facilities to maintain strict safety protocols. While accidents happen, proper planning and execution can make all the difference in minimizing risks to people and the environment.
