This afternoon, the Oak Park Fire Department got an emergency call about a partial building collapse in the 200 block of Harrison Street, specifically covering the area from 201 to 211 at the southwest corner of Harrison and Lombard. Dan McInerney, who happened to be nearby, sent us several photos and a detailed account of what happened:
According to Dan, Oak Park dispatched three fire engines, two ambulances, a command van, and the MABAS Division 11 Technical Rescue Vehicle after receiving a report of a building collapse at Lombard and Harrison around 1:50 PM. When they arrived, firefighters found a one-story, L-shaped commercial structure that was roughly 150 feet wide and 100 feet deep. The brick façade along about 100 feet of Harrison Street had collapsed onto the sidewalk. Fortunately, despite the heavy foot traffic in this busy commercial area, there were no injuries reported. However, two vehicles parked in front of the collapse site sustained minor damage from falling bricks. It turns out that the eastern part of the building had been undergoing renovations for quite some time. Firefighters immediately began searching through the debris along the sidewalk to ensure there were no trapped individuals. The entire operation lasted approximately 90 minutes as crews worked to stabilize the building and secure the utilities before handing it over to the building department.
