This afternoon, the Oak Park Fire Department got an emergency call about a partial building collapse in the 200 block of Harrison Street, specifically between 201 and 211, right at the southwest corner where Harrison meets Lombard Avenue. Dan McInerney, who happened to be nearby, managed to capture several photos and provided a detailed account of what unfolded:
According to McInerney's report, Oak Park dispatched three fire engines, two ambulances, a command vehicle, and even the specialized Mabas Division 11 Technical Rescue Vehicle after receiving the distress call at 1:50 PM. When they arrived on the scene, firefighters discovered a single-story, L-shaped commercial building roughly 150 feet wide and 100 feet deep. A significant portion of the brick facade—about 100 feet along Harrison Street—had crumbled and fallen onto the sidewalk. Fortunately, despite the busy nature of this commercial area, there were no reported injuries among people in the vicinity. However, two cars parked directly in front of the collapsed structure sustained minor damage from falling bricks. It turns out that the eastern section of the building had been undergoing renovations for quite some time. Firefighters promptly began searching through the rubble near the sidewalk to ensure there were no trapped individuals. Their efforts lasted around 90 minutes as they worked diligently to secure both the building and surrounding utilities before handing the situation over to the local building department.
