Box Alarm house fire in Des Plaines, 8-16-19

Late Friday night, firefighters from Des Plaines were dispatched to a residence located at 555 Leahy Circle East following reports of a basement fire. As emergency units approached the scene, thick smoke could be seen billowing from the house, prompting the dispatch to upgrade the call to an active fire response. Upon arrival, the first officer to survey the area outside confirmed reports of hoarding conditions inside the home. The residents had already evacuated safely, but firefighters encountered significant challenges in gaining access due to the severe clutter. The fire quickly spread from the basement to the second floor, affecting parts of the first floor as well. Despite efforts to direct water hoses through windows and doorways, reaching the core of the blaze proved difficult because of the extensive debris obstructing their path. After pulling personnel out of the building for safety reasons, the incident was escalated to a Box Alarm, calling for additional resources from neighboring departments. Firefighters eventually decided to allow the fire to burn itself out partially from the exterior so they could access it more effectively. A tower ladder was used to spray water from the front of the house, while handlines were deployed around the perimeter. By 4 AM, the majority of the fire had been brought under control, though crews remained at the scene for several more hours conducting mop-up operations. The firefighting effort involved not only Des Plaines units but also mutual aid from Prospect Heights, Mount Prospect, North Maine Fire Protection District, Elk Grove Township Fire Protection District, Wheeling, Park Ridge, Chicago Squad 7, Rosemont, Bensenville, and Glenview. As captured by Larry Shapiro’s photographs, the intensity of the flames and dense smoke made the situation particularly hazardous. One image shows heavy smoke pushing forcefully from the burning house, while another reveals how smoke curled dangerously around the siding. Other photos highlight the chaotic interior conditions, with smoke pouring out of a window and flames engulfing sections of the home, including the kitchen. The collaborative response by multiple fire departments was crucial in managing such a complex and dangerous fire scenario. The dedication of these firefighters ensured that no lives were lost, even amidst challenging circumstances caused by the hoarding situation and rapid fire progression.
