Late Sunday evening, around 7:30 PM, Northbrook police received an urgent call from a local resident alerting them about a fire in a second-floor bedroom at 613 Michelline Lane. By the time the first fire units arrived, it was clear this was no ordinary situation—they quickly classified it as a working fire, escalating the emergency response level from Code 3 to Code 4. Fortunately, firefighters managed to bring the flames under control swiftly, confining the damage primarily to one side of the second floor. Thankfully, all residents had safely evacuated before the fire department’s arrival.
Mutual aid support came from neighboring departments, including Glenview Truck 14, Glenview Engine 8, and Prospect Heights Engine 39. After the fire was extinguished, photographer Larry Shapiro visited the scene and captured several images documenting the aftermath.
One particularly striking image shows a supply line running from a nearby hydrant down the street directly to Northbrook Engine 10, which was positioned in front of the affected building. Another captures firefighters returning tools to Tower 12 once the immediate danger had passed. A third photograph highlights how Tower 12 wasn’t needed since the fire was successfully tackled by interior firefighting teams. The initial blaze had started in the corner bedroom but spread slightly into the adjacent room, though thankfully not beyond that.
Larry also snapped shots of Northbrook Engine 10, which had been the first suppression unit on the scene and already had two water lines operational. Another compelling image features Northbrook Engine 11, a Pierce Impel model, acting as the third due suppression company. There’s also a picture of Glenview Truck 14 responding promptly under automatic aid protocols while the initial alarm was still active.
It’s always reassuring to see such swift and coordinated efforts between different departments during emergencies like these. The cooperation ensures that communities remain safe even when faced with unexpected challenges. These photos serve as a testament to the hard work and dedication of our local firefighters who are often the first line of defense against disaster.
