Fatal House fire in Highland Park, 4-18-18

It was just after 1 AM on Wednesday, April 18th, 2018, when Highland Park firefighters responded to reports of a house fire on Churchill Lane near Kipling Lane on the northwest side of town. The first responders, police officers, confirmed a fire at the residence located at 2088 Churchill Lane. Upon arrival, fire crews found a two-story house fully engulfed in flames. The alarm was quickly escalated to a Code 4, indicating an active fire that had been burning for quite some time. Within minutes, the situation worsened as the roof collapsed along with a two-story portico over the driveway. Due to the intensity of the fire, firefighters were unable to safely enter the main living area for a primary search. Defensive operations were initiated instead, prioritizing the safety of the crew while attempting to control the blaze. The status of the home's occupants remained unclear, though neighbors speculated that the residents might have been hoarders based on previous observations. The firefighting effort involved multiple units from Highland Park, including Squad 33, Engine 32, Engine 34, Ambulance 32, Ambulance 33, Battalion 33, and 3300. Additional support came from neighboring departments such as Lake Forest and Knollwood, with engines; Deerfield, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, and Wilmette providing truck services; and Northfield Squad 29 and Deerfield Battalion 20 also contributing resources. North Chicago, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, and Countryside were expected to arrive with additional ambulances. A Box Alarm was later called in for fire investigators, and it was discovered that the correct address should have been 2088 Kipling Lane. By 10 AM, the fire department announced that they had recovered two bodies from the rubble, marking a tragic end to the incident. As I reflect on the images captured from the scene, one can't help but notice the immense effort put forth by the firefighters. The photos show various angles of the fire, including a supply line being led out by Deerfield-Bannockburn FPD Truck 20, Highland Park FD Squad 33 operating a deck gun, and numerous other scenes of firefighters working tirelessly to extinguish the flames. Even in the aftermath, firefighters were seen overhauling the site, ensuring no remaining embers posed a threat. Some images capture the eerie stillness post-fire, with a thin coating of ice adorning the charred remains, offering a stark contrast to the chaos earlier in the night. This event serves as a somber reminder of the dangers faced by first responders and the unpredictable nature of fires. My thoughts go out to everyone involved, especially the families affected by this tragedy.
