Hi everyone,
I just got back from covering an incident at Bangs Lake in Wauconda. It started off as a rescue call but quickly turned into a recovery effort. Around 7:20 PM last night, emergency responders were dispatched to Lakeview Villa Beach after two boys on a paddleboat fell into the water. Fortunately, a couple of nearby fishermen managed to save one of the boys, the 10-year-old, who was brought to safety by the time help arrived.
However, the situation took a tragic turn when it became clear that the 9-year-old had drifted further out into the lake due to strong winds and rough waters. The Wauconda Fire Department, along with teams of divers and sonar operators from neighboring departments, worked tirelessly throughout the evening to locate him. As of 9:45 PM, rescuers were still searching, and officials mentioned that the operation might continue well past midnight.
Despite their best efforts, the 9-year-old was later found unresponsive, and unfortunately, he did not survive. My heart goes out to his family during this incredibly difficult time.
Here are some photos I took at the scene earlier tonight:

Please keep the family and all those involved in the rescue effort in your thoughts and prayers.

Excerpts from ABC7Chicago.com:
The incident began around 7:20 PM Friday when a distress call came in regarding two boys who capsized in Bangs Lake near Lakeview Villa Beach. Emergency services were immediately dispatched, and bystanders were instrumental in pulling the older child to safety. However, the younger boy drifted farther out into the lake, complicating the search efforts. High winds and turbulent water conditions hampered visibility and progress, forcing rescuers to rely heavily on advanced sonar technology and multiple divers working around the clock.
Local authorities confirmed that the boy was eventually located but tragically did not survive. Fire officials praised the quick response of the community members who helped stabilize the situation and expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts across various departments. The 10-year-old survivor was reportedly treated for minor injuries and released to his parents.
As news of the tragedy spread, the tight-knit community of Wauconda gathered to offer support and condolences. Local businesses have opened donation centers to assist the grieving family, while social media has lit up with heartfelt messages of sympathy and solidarity.
Rest in peace, little one. You will never be forgotten.
