The signing of a memorandum of understanding between Michelin and Yunnan Farming will provide technical assistance in improving the production capacity of natural rubber and enhancing the cold resistance of rubber trees.

On September 14, the Michelin Group from France signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Yunnan Farming Group Co., Ltd. and the Yunnan Institute of Tropical Crops, aiming to strengthen collaboration in the field of natural rubber production. Under this agreement, Michelin will offer technical support to enhance the productivity of natural rubber and improve the cold resistance of rubber trees, which is crucial for sustainable growth in the region. The MoU outlines specific areas where Michelin will assist its partners, including the application of latex physiological diagnostic methods, innovation in tapping techniques, research on cold-resistant tree varieties, and the prevention of bark necrosis. This partnership aims to boost the overall efficiency and quality of rubber production in Yunnan, one of China's key rubber-growing regions. Bai Hao, Director of Michelin China Operations, emphasized that the company has long-term plans for the Chinese market and is dedicated to bringing advanced technologies and expertise to the country’s rubber industry. He highlighted that improving natural rubber production, quality, and efficiency not only benefits the industry but also contributes to environmental sustainability. Additionally, he noted that this collaboration aligns with Michelin’s broader strategy to support the development of upstream supply chains in related sectors. He Tianxi, Deputy General Manager of Yunnan Farming Group, stated that the partnership with Michelin allows both sides to exchange valuable technical knowledge and resources, particularly in the area of disease resistance in rubber trees. This cooperation is expected to foster innovation and long-term growth in the sector. It is worth noting that Michelin has been actively involved in supporting Yunnan’s rubber industry since 2000. From 2001 to 2004, the company regularly sent technical teams to Yunnan every September to assess the state of natural rubber production and provide specialized guidance on rubber tree cultivation. The latest MoU reaffirms Michelin’s strong commitment to the Chinese market and its vision of growing alongside the local rubber industry and its supply chain.
