High purity silicon purification technology breaks foreign monopoly

On February 17, it was reported by the Science and Technology Department of Fujian Province that Quanzhou Nanan Sanjing Silicon Refining Co., Ltd. has successfully developed the first large-diameter solar-grade silicon single crystal rod in the province. This breakthrough marks a significant step forward in the localization of high-purity silicon purification technology, breaking the long-standing monopoly held by a few developed countries in this critical area. According to recent reports, the physical purification technology for solar-grade high-purity silicon developed by Tri-crystal Silicon Refinement Co., Ltd. offers several advantages, including a simple process, high output, low energy consumption, and no environmental pollution. Once fully operational in July this year, the production of photovoltaic battery products is expected to reach an annual output of 200 tons of monocrystalline silicon (polysilicon) and 25 megawatts of photovoltaic cells. With the support of the photovoltaic high-purity silicon project, the company aims to establish a complete domestic industrial chain for solar silicon materials, photovoltaic batteries, and applications, with a total output value reaching up to 1.2 billion yuan. Wen Lishi, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a researcher at the Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, emphasized that high-purity silicon is the core raw material for photovoltaic products. Mastering the purification technology means controlling the lifeline of the optoelectronics industry. The solar-grade high-purity silicon independently developed by Nanan Sanjing Silicon Products Co., Ltd. has already met the requirements for solar cell production. Compared to traditional purification methods used by Western European countries and other domestic manufacturers, this physical purification technique is more cost-effective, scalable, and environmentally friendly. It has effectively broken the foreign technological blockade and product restrictions on China’s solar-grade silicon production, addressing previous challenges that hindered the growth of the photovoltaic industry. The company's raw material supply advantage has now become a key driver for the development of the photovoltaic sector in Quanzhou. Nanan Sanjing Silicon Crystal Refining Co., Ltd. is one of the few companies in China that possesses advanced silicon purification technology. In 2007, the company produced over 1,000 tons of solar-grade high-purity silicon, and by 2008, the output is expected to rise to 5,000 tons. By 2009, the annual output is projected to exceed 10,000 tons, capable of supplying 100MW, 500MW, and 1,000MW of photovoltaic cells respectively. The company is well on its way to becoming the largest supplier of silicon raw materials in the Nanan photovoltaic industry.
