At around 3 A.M. today, both the Prospect Heights Fire and Police Departments were alerted to a serious traffic accident that had occurred on Camp McDonald Road near Maple, about 50 yards east of Station 9. Upon their arrival, responders discovered a single-car incident involving four occupants. It seems that the vehicle lost control while traveling eastbound, veered off the road, struck a tree, and also damaged a mailbox in one yard before colliding with another tree in the adjacent yard. The impact was so severe that it essentially split the car into two parts before it could reach the front bedrooms of the house. Tragically, three of the four teenagers inside the car were ejected during the crash; all four were critically injured, but tragically, three of them passed away instantly. The fourth individual was rushed to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge for emergency care.
The local police department called in the accident recovery team, who remained on the scene for several hours. It took approximately 12 hours from the time of the accident for the vehicle to finally be cleared from the area. Later that afternoon, photographer Larry Shapiro visited the site as crews worked to remove the wreckage. He captured several images documenting the aftermath of the devastating collision. One particularly striking photo shows the large tree in the front yard that likely prevented further damage to the house, given its proximity to the bedrooms. Another image highlights how thoroughly the rear of the car was destroyed by its violent encounter with the tree, scattering debris across the lawn.
