Lake Bluff 2-11 Alarm

This morning, a fire broke out in Lake Bluff, and the alarm was escalated to a working fire even before the first responding unit arrived, thanks to the visible smoke from the fire station. When the first units arrived at 113 Woodland Avenue, they found the structure engulfed in heavy smoke. It wasn't long before the fire was upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm. Lake Bluff received support from Knollwood and Lake Forest on the initial call, while additional resources from Highwood, Highland Park, North Chicago, Libertyville, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, and Countryside were dispatched to assist on the Box Alarm. About 30 minutes later, a Second Alarm was called as flames burst through the roof, making the older Tudor-style home in desperate need of extensive overhaul, requiring multiple companies for relief efforts. I happened to be nearby when the call came in and reached the scene shortly after the initial units arrived. My colleague, Jeff Rudolph, also made it there and captured some compelling images that I’ll share in an upcoming update. Looking at the photos, Knollwood's Truck 44 was the first-in truck, as Knollwood and Lake Bluff typically respond together on most alarms. Lake Bluff Engine 519, a 2007 Pierce Saber, quickly took position in the 'A' Sector in front of the house. Highwood's Truck 37, equipped with their 2001 HME Smeal 75' quint, was also dispatched to the Box Alarm. As the situation unfolded, firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the blaze. In one image, you can see fire breaking through the roof, with a firefighter inside working to extinguish any remaining flames in the lower soffit. Other firefighters are visible on the second floor, where the fire had already been brought under control. Another photo shows a lighter smoke haze emanating from the front of the house as firefighters continued their search for hotspots and began the overhaul process. Safety was paramount, as evidenced in another image where firefighters are seen carrying a ladder to the roof for ventilation purposes before accessing it. Inside the house, a firefighter is completely enveloped in smoke while working to ventilate the second floor. Highwood firefighter Karl Klotz is seen regrouping in the rear before heading back in to assist with the overhaul effort. It was a challenging situation, but the coordinated efforts of all involved departments helped bring the fire under control. This incident once again highlights the dedication and professionalism of our local firefighting teams.
