Late last Friday night (September 16, 2016), shortly after 9:30 PM, I received word that the Long Grove Fire Protection District was dispatched along with mutual aid companies to an address near Old McHenry Road and Cuba Road. From what I gathered, it was a report of a house fire in the area. Given its proximity to the fire station, the Long Grove units were on the scene within minutes. When they arrived, they found a vacant, run-down house off Shagbark Lane engulfed in flames.
The initial dispatch was marked as Code 3 but was quickly escalated to Code 4 upon confirmation of an active fire. The first wave of responders included nine units, featuring three tankers. Subsequent reinforcements brought in another 12 units, including five tenders, alongside several chief officers.
The Long Grove Squad 55 and Tanker 55 played a crucial role, using 4,000 gallons of water initially. This was quickly supported by Wauconda’s tanker, which added 3,200 gallons, while Lake Zurich Engine 4 contributed an additional 1,000 gallons. A tanker shuttle was set up to manage the water supply efficiently.
As the situation intensified, a Box Alarm and then a Second Alarm specifically for tenders were called in, bringing even more resources to the scene. Throughout the night, firefighters worked tirelessly, battling the blaze and managing the significant water demands required to control such a large-scale fire.

This was a challenging incident that showcased the dedication and coordination of multiple fire departments. It was a reminder of both the risks these professionals face and their ability to work together under pressure.
