As a resident of Chicago, I’ve been following the series of fires that have occurred over the past couple of days. The second significant incident on December 22nd happened at 6417 N Ravenswood Avenue. This particular fire was a challenging one, and details have been shared by Chi-Town Fire Photos.
The first alarm had been issued for what initially seemed like a small rubbish fire. However, when the Multi-Factory Alarm Officer (MFAO) upgraded the call, things quickly escalated. I had already arrived at the earlier fire on Clark Street, so I rushed to this location as soon as I could. When I got there, I saw an old, single-story auto body shop engulfed in thick smoke billowing out from every possible opening. Firefighters were doing their best to gain access through a door on the side of the building. Once inside, they encountered heavy smoke and tried to push forward, but they were soon ordered to retreat by the incident commander. It became clear that the fire was too aggressive, and the decision was made to go defensive.
The fire proved to be incredibly stubborn, making progress slow despite the efforts of multiple handlines and aerial master streams. At its peak, eight handlines and two aerial master streams were deployed, yet the flames continued to rage. It took a while before the fire department managed to control the blaze enough to prevent it from spreading to neighboring structures. Even then, the fire burned through the roof of the building, causing extensive damage. Thankfully, firefighters were able to limit the spread of the fire, protecting nearby buildings from catching alight.
This fire highlighted the challenges faced by Chicago’s firefighters, especially given the limited resources available in staging areas. It’s a stark reminder of the dangers they face daily and the dedication they show in protecting our city.
