I just came across this really cool post from the Blue Island Historical Society’s Facebook page. They shared an article about plans for a new Fire Department Museum set to be built right across the street from the fire station on Vermont Street. The museum is the brainchild of local resident Joe Dinovo and has been made possible thanks to the efforts of the City of Blue Island, the O’Callaghan family, the BIHS, and many dedicated volunteers. Their goal? To teach people about the rich history of the Blue Island Fire Department, as well as promote fire safety and prevention. One of the standout pieces they’ll have is none other than “Old Bess,†a stunning 1925 Seagrave fire engine that the city originally purchased brand-new. Isn’t that incredible?
The preliminary design shown below was crafted by another talented Blue Islander, Ken Jellema, who’s also contributed to other local projects. While the final structure might look a bit different once construction begins, it’s already shaping up to be something special. These kinds of initiatives take time, but given how supportive our community has always been, I’m confident we’ll see these dreams become reality sooner rather than later.
