China's first 50MW grade BFG gas turbine delivered to users

China's first 50MW-class blast furnace gas (BFG) turbine was delivered to Handan Iron and Steel on April 11th, marking a significant milestone for Hangzhou Steam Turbine Co., Ltd. (HST). This achievement demonstrates that HST now has the capability to enter the high-end gas turbine manufacturing industry. The unit, jointly developed with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, not only represents a historic breakthrough in HST’s development but also holds great practical value for China’s energy conservation, environmental protection, and the promotion of a circular economy. Gas turbines are considered a next-generation power solution, offering energy efficiency and clean energy benefits. They are complex, multi-disciplinary systems that integrate various fields of technology. Currently, only a handful of countries—such as the U.S., Japan, Germany, and France—are capable of independently developing gas turbines, which means their core technologies are often restricted. Until now, China lacked the ability to design and manufacture large-scale gas turbines domestically. To address this gap, HST leveraged its existing resources, advanced equipment, and technical expertise to partner with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and introduce gas turbine design and manufacturing technology. Through collaboration, HST aimed to absorb, innovate, and eventually achieve independent R&D and production. The BFG turbine customized for Handan Iron and Steel is specifically designed to operate with low-calorific-value gas under high combustion conditions. It is used in BFG combined cycle systems and has broad applications across industries such as steel, coal, and chemicals. According to reports, the turbine works by using the high-temperature flue gas from the gas turbine to generate steam via a waste heat boiler, which then drives a steam turbine to produce electricity. This combined cycle significantly boosts efficiency compared to traditional coal-fired steam turbines, which emit around 50–70 tons of CO₂ annually. The gas-steam combined cycle system offers higher thermal efficiency, lower emissions, reduced investment, shorter construction time, and greater automation, making it a promising power generation solution for the 21st century. In the 1980s, HST took five years to develop its first industrial turbine based on Siemens’ German technology. This time, after entering the advanced gas turbine sector, HST partnered with Mitsubishi and completed its first unit in just two years. This rapid progress highlights HST’s growing strength and ability to catch up with global cutting-edge manufacturing standards. Throughout the collaboration, HST maintained a win-win approach. Mr. Hiroshi, a representative from the Japanese side, humorously remarked, “I had many heated debates with Mr. Nie Zhonghai, the chairman of HST, but each time, Mr. Nie ended up winning.” Both parties consider this cooperation a model of mutual benefit. For Mitsubishi, it brought valuable profits in the Chinese market, while for HST, it marked a successful entry into a new manufacturing domain and provided critical upgrades in technology, production, and management. These advancements laid a solid foundation for HST’s long-term goal of becoming a billion-dollar enterprise.
