Fatal fire in Evanston, 3-10-22

At around noon on Thursday, March 10, the Evanston Fire Department received reports of smoke emerging from a residential building located at 1516 Brummel St. Upon the arrival of the first emergency response teams, thick black smoke was visibly billowing from the basement of the single-family house. Firefighters quickly identified severe fire conditions on the lower level of the structure. The situation escalated rapidly, prompting the dispatch of additional resources from neighboring fire departments to assist in containing the blaze. Three hose lines were deployed to combat the flames effectively. The property owners discovered the fire upon returning home and noticing smoke emanating from their residence. Before the firefighters' arrival, an 87-year-old man, who is one of the property owners, ventured into the house to determine the origin of the smoke. When the firefighters arrived, they promptly located and rescued the man, who was found at the base of the basement stairs. Immediate life-saving efforts were administered, followed by his transportation to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. Family members were informed of the tragic incident, and condolences were extended by Evanston Fire Department Chaplain Monte Dillard and representatives from the American Red Cross. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. Smoke detectors were confirmed to be functioning at the time of the fire. According to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), smoke detectors should be tested monthly, and batteries should be replaced at least once or twice a year, depending on the manufacturer's recommendations. In case of smoke or carbon monoxide detector activation, residents are advised to evacuate the premises immediately and call 911.
