The immature operation of the domestic auto parts market has become a breeding ground for counterfeits

"China's auto parts market is going through a major transformation and still has a long way to go before it becomes mature," said an industry insider at the national auto parts quality work seminar on April 22. He described the current state of the market as "a sentimental fruit"—meaning it's full of potential but not yet fully realized. Some say the auto parts market has become a breeding ground for counterfeit goods. Ye Berlin, a senior engineer from the National User Committee, emphasized that cracking down on fake products at the source is essential. “If we don’t stop this at the root, inferior parts will always be a problem,” he said. In his view, poor-quality parts thrive because merchants produce fakes to maximize profits, while car owners buy them to cut costs. This creates a vicious cycle where substandard products continue to flood the market. To get a better sense of the situation, a Financial Times reporter spoke with a car owner in Beijing. “When I go to buy parts, the seller always asks if I want original or after-market,” the owner admitted. Original parts are those produced by the car’s manufacturer, while after-market parts come from third-party suppliers. Usually, original parts are more expensive, but many after-market products are of lower quality. Yang Youcai, vice president of the Kunming Auto Parts Industry Association, noted that most people believe original parts are the same as factory-fitted ones. However, reports show that the quality of so-called "original parts" sold in the market varies widely. For example, a domestic brand called "Three Filter" was priced at over 40 yuan in a specialized repair shop, 30 yuan in a general workshop, and as low as 8 yuan in some local markets. “If this is a qualified product, it wouldn't even cover the cost of raw materials,” said a representative from the Chengdu Auto Parts Delegation, clearly frustrated. There is also growing competition between 4S dealerships and independent service providers. In Kunming, car manufacturers require 4S stores to occupy at least 10 mu (about 6,667 square meters), making it difficult for smaller dealers to survive. Experts predict that more 4S shops will emerge under franchise models, which integrate sales, maintenance, parts, and financial services. These are closely tied to the interests of automakers. In contrast, independent service providers lack such affiliations and have much less strength. While the U.S. has around 70% of its auto service market dominated by independent shops, China is following a similar trend. However, this balance is changing due to the increasing number of private car owners and greater competition, which may lead to the rise of large chain operators in the independent sector. Experts believe that the two key areas where this shift is likely to happen are auto supplies and maintenance services. In the U.S., the top five chains account for over 40% of all auto parts stores. Meanwhile, in China, the dominance of 4S shops continues to challenge local manufacturers who lack the resources to compete. The operation model of the auto parts market is still being explored. Traditional models like 3S or 4S, as well as chain stores and supermarkets, each have their own strengths and weaknesses. “What works depends on local conditions and market maturity,” said one industry professional. Huo Yiguang, president of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce Auto Industry and Commerce Association, believes that the auto parts market plays a crucial role in enhancing China’s global competitiveness in the automotive sector. He added that some issues can only be resolved through industry policies and regulations.
