Boom concrete pump truck technology innovation has become the focus of a new round of competition

China began developing boom-type concrete pump trucks in the early 1980s, initially focusing on importing spare parts and assembling them. Later, it combined technology transfer with partial production, gradually building its own manufacturing capability. In the 1950s, China had already produced mechanical concrete pumps, but due to limited technological capabilities at the time, the production volume was very low. By the early 1980s, the total number of domestic concrete pump trucks was still under 200 units, and armored concrete pump trucks were completely nonexistent. During this period, large-scale concrete pouring projects in China largely relied on imported equipment. After more than two decades of effort since the early 1980s, China's boom-type concrete pump trucks have made significant progress in design and manufacturing. According to statistics, there are now over 100 manufacturers across the country. However, there is a noticeable gap in technical level, production capacity, and quality among different companies. The top-tier manufacturers include Sany Heavy Industry, Zoomlion, Xuzhou Heavy Industries, and Futian Heavy Machinery, while second-tier companies like Liaoning Hainuo and Anhui Xingma also play a major role in the industry. In recent years, China’s boom-type concrete pump trucks have developed rapidly. Although they may not yet match foreign products in terms of stability and technology, they have significantly improved compared to earlier models. Domestically produced pumps offer better cost-performance and after-sales service, making them more suitable for local construction conditions. Zoomlion and Sany Heavy Industry lead in the research and development of boom-type concrete pump trucks. Zoomlion has even set industry standards and developed remote maintenance systems for pump trucks. Sany’s pumps are comparable to international brands in terms of pressure, displacement, and reliability, and have been exported to regions such as the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia. According to data from the State Patent Bureau, most domestic patents in the pumping machinery field focus on pumps, control systems, and hydraulic components. While this shows strong R&D efforts, it also highlights that key technologies like jibs and spare parts remain less developed. However, leading companies like Sany and Zoomlion are continuously investing in R&D and achieving impressive results. The major components of boom-type concrete pump trucks are evolving rapidly. Domestic manufacturers have improved their design and production processes, aiming for independent innovation. The chassis, which powers both movement and operation, is increasingly diversified. While many use imported brands like Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, and Isuzu, domestic chassis are now entering the market, offering cost-effective alternatives. Structurally, boom designs are becoming more flexible and adaptable. Longer booms, such as 37m or more, are becoming common, and future trends point toward even longer booms. The outrigger systems are also evolving to be more versatile, improving efficiency in confined spaces. Hydraulic systems are moving toward integration, with both open and closed-loop circuits being widely used. These systems enhance performance, reliability, and ease of maintenance. Meanwhile, control systems are becoming more intelligent, featuring touchscreens, automated diagnostics, and remote monitoring capabilities. Technological innovation is now at the core of competition in the industry. Manufacturers are focusing on improving functionality, reliability, and user experience. Future trends include longer booms, higher pumping capacities, and the integration of smart technologies like GPS and self-diagnostic systems. Domestic manufacturers are also paying more attention to environmental sustainability, energy efficiency, and user comfort. As the market matures, competition will shift toward product refinement, service quality, and customer satisfaction. In summary, China’s boom-type concrete pump truck industry has grown significantly, with domestic products now capable of competing with imported ones. While challenges remain, continuous improvements in technology, service, and design are positioning Chinese manufacturers as strong players in the global market.
