My high-tech manufacturing exports ranked second in the world

China's high-tech manufacturing sector and its product exports have now climbed to the second-largest in the world, according to a press conference held by the State Council Information Office in Beijing. The report highlighted significant growth in recent years, with the sector showing remarkable progress in both scale and global competitiveness. Zhang Xiaoqiang, deputy director of the National Development and Reform Commission, emphasized that the five years following the 16th National Congress marked a period of rapid development for China’s high-tech industries. In 2006, the added value of these industries accounted for 8% of GDP, up from 5% in 2000. Sales revenue from high-tech manufacturing grew at an average annual rate of 27%, reaching 4.2 trillion yuan that year. Meanwhile, exports of high-tech products more than quadrupled, reaching $281.5 billion in 2006, which made up nearly 29% of China’s total foreign trade exports. Looking ahead, the government aims to increase the proportion of high-tech industry added value to 10% of GDP by 2010. To achieve this, the National Development and Reform Commission is working closely with financial institutions such as the China Development Bank and the Shenzhen Stock Exchange. The goal is to encourage capital markets and banks to support innovation and technological advancement in Chinese enterprises through various financial tools. Another key focus is accelerating the upgrading and transformation of traditional industries. Priority will be given to technologies related to energy conservation, clean production, and resource recycling. The commission plans to launch special projects aimed at advancing industrial technology and building national engineering research centers, national engineering laboratories, and state-recognized enterprise technology centers. These initiatives are expected to enhance the country's independent R&D capabilities and help overcome technological bottlenecks during industrial restructuring and economic transition.
